How To Care for an Inflatable Paddle Board

Sep 6th 2024

Taking care of your inflatable paddle board might seem like a chore, but it’s easier than you think—and totally worth it! With just a little effort, your board will be ready for all your paddling adventures and perform at its best. Whether you’re just learning how to paddle board or are already a pro, following these simple tips will keep your iSUP looking and functioning like new for longer.

1. Proper Inflation and Deflation

Getting the inflation and deflation right is critical to keeping your inflatable stand up paddle board in great shape. Always use a good-quality pump—whether it’s electric or a hand pump—designed specifically for inflatable SUPs. Be careful not to overinflate or underinflate, as this can damage the drop stitch fabric that keeps your board sturdy and well-shaped.

After your paddling session, deflate the board, especially if you’re not planning to use it for a while. Leaving it inflated for too long can stress the material and cause leaks.

When deflating your board, roll it from the nose to the tail to squeeze out as much air as possible. Once that’s done, unroll it and do a final roll from the tail to the nose. This second roll helps compact the board, making it easier to fit into its carry bag.

2. Avoid Extreme Weather Conditions

To ensure the longevity of your inflatable paddle board, keep it safe from extreme weather. Materials like PVC and drop stitch fabric can break down over time if exposed to too much heat, cold, or direct sunlight.

Avoid leaving your inflated board in a hot car or on scorching sand—the heat can cause the air inside to expand and potentially damage the board. On the flip side, extreme cold can make the material brittle and more prone to punctures.

When you’re not using your iSUP, it's best to store it in a cool, shaded spot. Keep it inside a protective dry bag or use a UV-resistant cover to shield it from the elements, including harmful UV rays.

3. Cleaning and Maintenance

After a day on the water, rinse your inflatable paddle board thoroughly with fresh water. Saltwater can be corrosive and damage your board’s deck pad, attachment points, and other components. A simple rinse with a hose can help prevent salt buildup and keep your board looking new.

In addition to rinsing, occasionally deep clean your board with a mild soap and a soft sponge. This helps remove any accumulated dirt, grime, or algae. Let your board dry completely before storing it; a wet board can lead to mold and mildew growth.

4. Storing Your iSUP

Storing your inflatable paddle board correctly maintains its condition. Store your board in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. For long-term storage, keep it in a place where the temperature stays between 40°F and 100°F.

Do not hang inflated stand up paddle boards from any attachment points. This can place unnecessary stress on those areas, potentially leading to warping, material weakening, or even tears over time. It’s better to store the board flat or rolled inside a storage bag to maintain its shape and longevity.

5. Use Proper Accessories

Investing in the right SUP paddle board accessories can make a big difference in the longevity of your inflatable paddle board. A repair kit, for instance, includes a wrench and matching PVC material; the wrench is handy for tightening or replacing the valve. Also, consider using a paddle board leash to keep your board secure, a high-quality pump to ensure proper inflation, and a protective bag or cover to shield your board during transport and storage.

6. Perform Regular Inspections

Regularly inspect your inflatable paddle board for any signs of wear, such as small tears, leaks, or loose attachment points; this is especially important if you are using a used iSUP. Pay special attention to the seams, deck pad, and drop stitch material. If you notice any damage, address it immediately.

7. Transporting Your iSUP

When transporting your inflatable stand-up paddle board, use a protective bag or cover. This prevents scratches, punctures, and other damage during transport and makes carrying all your gear to the water easier.
